    January 23, 2012

Déborah Bouchonneau defended her PhD thesis entitled "Analysis of the development potential of unconventional hydrocarbon resources" on December 2nd at IFP School. This thesis was supervised by Jacques Percebois, Professor at the University of Montpellier 1 and Frédéric Lantz, Professor at IFP School.

The thesis committee also included Joseph Doucet, Professor at the Alberta School of Business and Christian Michelot, Professor at the University of Burgundy, as reviewers, and Michel de Lara, Professor at the École des Ponts ParisTech, as Chairman of the jury.

This thesis in economics focused on the study of the development potential of tar sands under different scenarios related to the economic and environmental context. The first part of this thesis showed two phases of development: the first, from 1980 to 2005, corresponding to the emergence of the sector through regulatory, economic and geographic boosts, and the second, beginning in 2005 with the degradation of the economic environment, marked by a sharp decrease of the development of the sector. The second part of the thesis focuses on the 2050 prospective analysis. This thesis has resulted in a publication and two lectures at international conferences.
